Lusitano Horse
The Lusitano Horse is the Portuguese variant of the Iberian Horse. Though not a distinct breed and genetically indistinct from the Andalusian, they have maintained their official name (from Lusitania the old Latin for Portugal) since 1966. They are excellent performers in the Portuguese bullfighting ring, which is regarded as an art form rather than a battle between mad and bull and the bull is not killed.
Though Lusitano and the Andalusian share the same genetic background and character, selective breeding has meant they differ somewhat in conformation. For example, the Lusitano has a more sloped croup and as a result its tail is set lower. Their head is also notable more convex.
In both the versions of the Iberian horse grey and bay is common, as well as the occasional and most impressive appearing mulberry shade.? Both versions have a luxurious mane and tail.
Uses of the Lusitano
The Lusitano is a utility horse used as a pleasure mount, for dressage, farm work and light draft work. They are marvelous to ride and have a calm, levelheaded temperament. They are well balanced, intelligent and clever horses.
Characterstics
Most often grey(though any solid color is possible and allowed) the Lusitano Horse usually stands 1.53.1.63m(15 to 16h)high.? Body is compact with powerful hindquarters and a high stepping action.? Mane and tail are both full and luxurious. Nose is pronounced and Roman, forehead is wide(in contrast to the Andalusian's straighter profile).? Neck is short and thick, chest is broad with well-sprung ribs and a short back.? They are a powerful, strong horse due to their compact build, muscular hind quarters and strong, long legs.
